Acoustic interlayer, heads up display, infrared coating, rain sensors and bonded camera brackets. A lot of what parks along Skyline and Sunrise takes a windshield that is nothing like the base part, and fitting the wrong one is obvious the first morning the sun comes over the ridge.
The first is the glass itself. Foothills driveways hold a high proportion of vehicles specified with laminated acoustic windshields, projected heads up displays, infrared reflective coatings, humidity and rain sensors, and forward facing cameras bonded to a bracket that is part of the glass. Those are not interchangeable parts. A heads up display windshield has a wedge shaped interlayer that stops the projected image ghosting, and fitting a standard panel in its place produces a doubled speedometer readout that no amount of adjustment will clear. We check the specification against the VIN before anything is ordered.
The second is the Catalina Highway. A run up to Mount Lemmon takes a vehicle through about six thousand feet of elevation and a temperature drop that can exceed thirty degrees in under an hour, then reverses the whole thing on the way down. That is a far harsher thermal cycle than anything a car experiences sitting in a parking lot, and existing chips very often move on the descent rather than the climb. If you have damage and you are heading up to the observatory or to ski, get it repaired first.
Beyond that, the roads themselves are gentler here than most of Tucson. Sunrise, Skyline and Sabino Canyon are well surfaced and lower volume, so the usual arterial gravel is less of a factor. What we see instead is decomposed granite off long private drives, thrown up by the vehicle's own tires on the way out.
The work is the same craft everywhere, but the parts list and the calibration step are what make a Foothills job different from one in the flats.
Wedge interlayers, acoustic laminate, infrared coatings and solar tint bands. We order against the VIN rather than the model year, because two identical looking cars on the same street can take different panels.
Lane keeping, adaptive cruise and automatic braking all read through the windshield. Move the glass and the camera has to be recalibrated. It is not an upsell, it is the difference between a system that works and one that thinks the lane is somewhere else.
Twenty minutes in your own driveway, and on a specialty windshield the saving against replacement is larger than anywhere else, because the part it prevents you buying is an expensive one.
Including laminated side glass, which a lot of quieter luxury vehicles use instead of tempered. It behaves differently, it is a different part, and it is worth having someone who knows which one you have.
On a vehicle with specialty glass the identification step is where jobs go right or wrong. Everything after it is straightforward.
Heads up display, acoustic layer, rain sensor, heated wiper park, camera bracket and tint band all get confirmed before an order is placed.
If the part needs ordering in, we tell you the lead time honestly rather than booking you and hoping. Nothing gets substituted without your agreement.
Covers down, old panel out, bond line trimmed and primed, new glass set. A long private drive or a steep approach is not a problem, and we work in shade where there is any.
The camera is recalibrated and checked, and you get a specific time when the vehicle is safe to drive rather than a vague estimate.
Most of these are specific to living against the range rather than out in the valley, and none of them are obvious until somebody points them out.
If you are planning a run up to Mount Lemmon and you have a chip, call us first. The descent is where we lose windshields that were perfectly stable that morning, and a repair beforehand takes twenty minutes.
Dealer Auto Glass TucsonBoth, and the choice is yours. On a vehicle with a heads up display, a bonded camera bracket, or an acoustic interlayer we will tell you honestly where the aftermarket equivalent is genuinely equivalent and where it is not. Insurers often authorize aftermarket by default, and you are allowed to ask for something different.
It changes the part. A heads up display windshield uses a wedge shaped interlayer to stop the projected image from ghosting. Fit a standard panel and you get a doubled readout that cannot be adjusted out. We confirm this from the VIN before ordering.
Yes, provided the camera is recalibrated, which we do as part of the job. Any shop that replaces a windshield on an equipped vehicle and does not mention calibration is one to be careful with.
Only if the vehicle itself has to sit on the steep part. We need reasonably level ground for the car, not for the van, so pulling it onto the flat pad near the house is usually all it takes. Tell us when you book and we will plan for it.
With arrangement, yes. We need a way in, access to the vehicle, and a number that will be answered. Plenty of Foothills customers leave a gate code and come home to finished glass.
Specialty windshields, calibration included, fitted at your house. No guessing at the part, no surprises when the heads up display comes back on.
